The Phosphorus-index has been identified within the Intensive Pig Production Program as a cost effective tool to reduce the risk for phosphor losses from fields. Different P-indices (or similar models) have been developed in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Germany, but so far the practical use of P-indices is very low. In January 2011, Baltic Sea 2020 arranged a workshop, for scientists, authorities and agricultural advisers to exchange experiences. The participants agreed on that P-indices are a potentially useful tool to predict the risk for P-losses from agricultural field, but that the models need to be developed and made more user friendly.
